Batek Workshop

Penang is rich with traditional trades. Though, trade craftsmen are disappearing with the older generation due to many reasons. At The Star Pitt St, we hope to revive interest in traditional trades and crafts.

This workshop is the second of the Traditional Artisan series.

Batik is a traditional cloth art found in various countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, India, Sri Lanka, Philippines and Nigeria. While the batik of Indonesia is best-known, Malaysia has had a rich heritage of batik-making too. An obvious difference in between the Malaysian and Indonesian batik is that our motives are based on floral prints, whereas our neighbours' are based on fauna motifs. Unfortunately batik in Malaysia is a dying art with just some batik-artists still operating in the East Coast of the peninsular.

Join us, learn with Batek-Lah Collection 's artist who has more than 20 years of experience. Frame your own cloth, mix your own dye, prepare your own wax, draw and paint your own master piece!

First 5 children (5-17 years) enter for free.
Early bird (now till 11 March): RM55
Standard 2 (11 March - 19th March): RM75

The workshop is suitable for children and adults.
